UNDERSTANDING MARKETS THROUGH STRUCTURED ANALYSIS
Unlike traditional finance clubs, Mercatus focuses on understanding how markets work rather than pitching stocks or actively trading. Members explore macroeconomic developments, capital markets, and investment philosophy through structured discussion, sector deep dives, and book reviews.
Mercatus was founded with the belief that meaningful engagement with markets should be accessible to all students, from complete novices to seasoned finance and economics majors. Mercatus Society welcomes members of any major or background and aims to foster an environment built on intellectual curiosity, growth, and openness.
Our goal is not to promote a single viewpoint or strategy, but to help students develop the ability to reason clearly about markets, evaluate information critically, and articulate informed perspectives.
HOW MERCATUS IS STRUCTURED
1. Defined Research Roles
Every member takes ownership of a specific research role. Members are responsible for preparing and presenting their work each week, creating a hands-on model built on accountability and consistency rather than passive attendance.
2. Integrated Macro Perspective
The club is structured to cover markets as a system — including macroeconomic conditions, sentiment, and equity sectors. Additional roles in areas like asset classes, international markets, and government policy continue to expand this coverage.
3. Systematic Market Reviews
Meetings are formatted so that members have a clear spotlight to present their findings and reinforce their understanding over time. This repetition helps members build durable frameworks for understanding markets beyond short-term trends.
